## Mental Arithmetic with the UMC Abacus
The core thinking patterns children build between the ages of 4 and 12 can be developed through Mental Arithmetic education. Brain-working abilities such as memory, imagination, comprehension, perseverance, independence, and visualisation become sharper and sharper.
UMC is the pioneer of the two-hand, six-finger abacus method in Indonesia. With the mental abacus technique, children are trained to perform calculations in their minds without relying on tools. The abacus serves as a supporting tool in the early stages; with the right practice, children gradually learn to calculate quickly in their heads.
### The Two-Hand, Six-Finger Method
Finger movements during abacus practice build coordination between motor activity, vision, concentration, and a child's thinking process. Through the UMC Abacus program, children learn to operate the abacus using the 6-Finger Manipulation and 10-Finger Activation System.
### Flash Calculation
Children get to know Flash Calculation: numbers are shown in a flash, and children are challenged to process and calculate them mentally. This ability is built step by step through consistent practice — and it is not only for children considered super-gifted. Every child has the chance to develop it with routine practice and guidance from trained instructors.
### National Mental Arithmetic Competitions
UMC regularly organises Mental Arithmetic competitions so students can test their abilities, build confidence, and gain competition experience. UMC Indonesia students have achieved various awards at national and international events.
